Medieval York

York is one of the most visited cities in England - above all for its medieval heritage: the Minster, the city walls and the streets where many elements of the medieval city are still visible. Drawing on a mass of unpublished excavations over the last 35 years, Gareth Dean shows how York developed from Viking Jorvik into one of the wealthiest cities in medieval Europe. He describes the arrival of the Normans and the defences of the City; its religious life, embracing the Minster, parish churches, monastic houses, nunneries, friaries and hospitals; life and death, taking in housing and burial evidence; trade and industry with a host of Guilds; and finally the Dissolution of the monasteries.
