The Writing School

Author, translator and critic Miranda France sets off to teach at a residential writing course in the middle of nowhere, with all the hopes, tensions and unrealised ambitions that such courses bring for attendees and tutors alike. Slowly, however, we are made aware of a ghost in Miranda's life, and the daily dramas at the writing school start to interweave with her own story and her newly recovered memories of a death in the family she was a young teenager.Bringing in knowledge and anecdote from the author's own experience as well as other writers and poets, The Writing School is a moving exploration of why people write, as well as a quietly generous masterclass on writing itself - revealing about what drives us to want to put our lives into words, who has the right to tell another person's story, and what we do with the memory of people who have died.
