School of Visual Arts presents The Pond, the Mirror, the Kaleidoscope, an exhibition of emerging and established artists who graduated from SVA and are working in the Symbolist tradition. These "neo-Symbolists" make mythological and dreamlike pictures that challenge prevailing assumptions about narrative, subjectivity and figurative painting itself. Their subjects may be environmental (the pond), societal and cultural (the mirror) or a post-apocalyptic, futuristic mash-up (the kaleidoscope).

For it's inaugural exhibition cycle, PRAXES presents two parallel strings of exhibitions by Gerard Byrne (Dublin/Copenhagen) and Jutta Koether (Berlin/New York). Opening on 31 August 2013, PRAXES Center for Contemporary Art is a new not-for-profit venue for international contemporary art and research in Berlin. Situated in a two-story 200-square-meter former community building, PRAXES presents half-year cycles of consecutive exhibition modules, papers, and live activities revolving around two unassociated artistic practices.
Victoria Miro presents a new body of work by Idris Khan in his third solo presentation with the gallery. Beyond the Black (20 September to 9 November 2013) marks an important departure from Khan's photographic based works and comprises a suite of large black paintings, a monumental site specific wall drawing and a series of works on paper, all of which consider the metaphysics of creativity.
Gabriel Orozco is that rare artist who can switch between classical, quasi-autonomous paintings or sculptures and transient, seemingly improvised installations, interventions, objects, and photographs. Enormously versatile in approach, he sometimes draws on atmospherically charged, found, or occasionally casual situations and objects, as well as the exact opposite: the production of precise and perfectly crafted objects. In Bregenz he will be showing for the most part new works that have been conceived specially for the exhibition.
‘Transient Façades’ brings together seven London-based artists all of whom are concerned with making figurative work, predominantly within the two-dimensional world, as a means of exploring the plethora of illusions inherent within society. The works are to be shown at The ‘Well’, a space whose architectural nature suggests a similar focus to the collective’s work – multiple and varied viewpoints.
Bergen art museum in Norway presents an exhibition Real Life Stories, where installations, sculptures and paintings by ten leading Chinese artists are shown in Norway for the first time. During the last 15 years, the popularity and acclaim of Chinese contemporary art within the international art world has near skyrocketed. These artists stand firmly between history and contemporary life, and between China and the international art world.
Drawing Room presents a major solo exhibition by Paul Sietsema. The exhibition will include two new films, drawings and paintings previously unseen in the UK. Sietsema's artworks reveal an interest in the materiality of objects and images combined with a more conceptualised concern with the legacies of past eras of cultural history and the contextualisation of artefacts, the process of image making and changing conceptions of what constitutes material.
Fundación Mapfre is presenting a retrospective of the American photographer Imogen Cunningham (Portland, Oregon, 1883–San Francisco, 1976). Over the course of her lengthy career Cunningham was a pioneer of modern photography and was widely recognised for the consistently high quality and innovative nature of her work. Organised in collaboration with La Fábrica, Madrid, this exhibition will be the most comprehensive survey of the artist to be seen in Europe in the last twenty years.
Hauntologies is artist and filmmaker John Akomfrah's compelling meditation on disappearance, memory and death. In his first exhibition for Carroll/Fletcher, the virtuosity and depth of Akomfrah's practice is revealed in three new video, sound and installation works - never before presented in the UK - as well as the new presentation of a video essay from 1998.
M HKA presents this retrospective, the most comprehensive presentation of Jimmie Durham's oeuvre to date. His many-faceted practice is an inspiration for many artists, curators, and theoreticians today, not least of the younger generation. He does not make "art about art" but work that is open to the world outside art. Durham, born in the U.S. in 1940 and based in Europe since 1994, is one of few contemporary artists to have hands-on experience of political work.
